This time I would like to introduce “Apollon”, a Japanese Izakaya located in Orchard. At first glance, it looks like a hideout bar, but the food is authentic and very delicious 😄

Impression

I was impressed by the gap between the seemingly hideaway bar atmosphere from the exterior to the interior and the very authentic Japanese food. In particular, the restaurant’s signature dish, “Chicken broth Oden” is exquisite 😄

Despite being a weekday evening, the restaurant was packed. It is evident that the restaurant is very popular.

I thought it was a fairly rare izakaya in Singapore where one can go alone and enjoy drinking and eating without worrying about the eyes of others.

Please visit to see how it feels.

Atmosphere

Appearance

The restaurant is located on the first floor of Orchard Plaza. It really looks like a bar, so it may take some time to find it if you go there thinking it is a Japanese restaurant. Here is the appearance.

Interior

The restaurant itself is very small. There are about 10 counter seats. It is really decorated like a bar. I personally like this kind of small store very much. You can enjoy drinking solo without worrying about the eyes of those around you 😄

The restaurant was full even on a weekday evening, so I highly recommend making reservations in advance before going.

Food

Menu

Here is the menu list. The most popular item on the menu is “Chicken broth Oden” 😄You can choose from an assortment or a la carte. The assortment includes 3 kinds and 6 kinds.

In addition to oden, the menu is quite extensive. There are many creative Japanese dishes. You can choose from a solid selection of snacks to fried foods and rice for the end of the meal.

Eating

I would like to introduce the menu I ordered this time. Before that, let’s start with beer 🍺 Cheers!

On the right is a hand towel. Yes, it is a small type of hand towel like those served in a nice restaurant. You can feel the hospitality of the restaurant 😄

Omakase Oden 3kinds($18)

We started with the restaurant’s most popular dish, chicken broth oden, and ordered an assortment of three kinds.

The first thing that surprised me was the size of the bowl! The oden served in a bowl the size of a ramen noodle is a sight to behold 😳.

The three varieties of the day were meatballs, daikon radish, and hanpen. All of them were substandard size! I have never seen oden with such large ingredients!

It is not just their size that is impressive. It also tastes insanely delicious. The soup tastes as delicious as the name “Chicken broth Oden”. The flavor and richness of the chicken is so strong that the soup alone is worth eating.

It is best served with karashi (mustard), yuzu kosho (yuzu pepper), and miso (soybean paste), which are provided as condiments.

Must try item 😄

Chicken Karate ($12)

The second item I ordered was this. This karaage also had a great impact. Like the oden, the size of each karaage is extremely large. I think it is a very good cosmetic price to offer such a large volume of fried food at this price 😄

As the menu name suggests, the aroma of yuzu kosho (Japanese pepper with yuzu citrus) whets the appetite. I highly recommend it paired with a highball!

Hot, crispy, decadent fried chicken, you must order this one too 😄

Slightly more Luxurious High Ball ($15)

I ordered a highball to drink with my fried chicken. There are two types of highballs on the menu, the “Kaku Highball” and the “Slightly Luxurious Highball.” The “Slightly Luxurious Highball” is made with Hekiju whiskey. The price difference is +$2.

I was able to leave the restaurant with the best combination of fried chicken and highball 😄.

Access

The store is located on the ground floor of Orchard Plaza. It is right in the middle of Orchard, so you should have no trouble getting there. There are many bus options; if you take the MRT, it is convenient to get off at Somerset.

Summary

I have found a good Japanese-style pub that is like a hideout. There are some regulars here, but it is not difficult to enter, and I think you will enjoy your first visit as well.

It is a precious place where you can enjoy drinks and meals alone without worrying about the eyes of others, so I’m sure I’ll be frequenting this place from now on 😄

But be careful not to ask for too much as each dish is very large.

I encourage everyone to visit at least once!
