This time I would like to introduce “Chen’s Mapo Tofu”, a restaurant specializing in Mapo Tofu Don located in Downtown. This restaurant is a Michelin Bib Gourmand winner!

General Review

The restaurant specializes in serving Mapo Tofu Don, so you can get a very tasty Mapo Tofu. Specialty restaurants are very strong 😁

There are three levels of spiciness to choose from, ranging from Lv.1 to Lv.3. Lv.1 is not spicy at all, so even those who do not like spicy food can enjoy it.

I also had the DanDan-men, but I think that was average. That being said, the quality of the Mapo Tofu Don is outstanding!

This is definitely a great restaurant that I can recommend if you are craving for Mapo Tofu Don 🎵 Please try it everyone 😁

Atmosphere

The store is located on the second floor of the Downtown Gallery on Shenton Way. This is Downtown Gallery. It is a beautiful building with a working space on the first floor.

Take the escalator up to the second floor, the store itself is in the back so it may be a little hard to find at first. When you see the flashy red sign, you have arrived at the restaurant 😁

The Michelin award is also well appealing.

You can choose between Take away and Dine-in, and this is what it looks like when you enter the restaurant with Dine-in.

I went there for lunch on a holiday and the seats were very empty. However, weekday lunch seems to be very crowded. It is a characteristic of an office area. The counter was frequented by Grab delivery people, so there seems to be a strong demand for Delivery on weekends and holidays.

Food

Orders are placed by scanning a QR code. The checkout was also done from my phone with Apple Pay. I appreciate the convenience of a system that can be completed with just one phone.

I went twice, so I would like to present two actual food reviews.

First visit

On my first visit, I ordered the standard Mapo Tofu Don with hot and sour soup as a side dish. I selected Lv.1 for spiciness.

This is a very authentic Mapo Don. Very appetizing 🤤

When I tried it, I found it to be excellent! This is the authentic Chinese taste. The spiciness of this Szechuan-style is characteristic of hot Mapo Tofu, but at Lv.1, you hardly feel the spiciness. The Mapo Tofu is relatively thick and rich, with a concentrated flavor. It is also a great combination of hot and sour soup with a bowl of mapo tofu. Sourness goes so well with mapo tofu 😁.

It was so delicious that it was gone in an instant!

Second visit

I ordered the Signature Combo this time because I couldn’t miss the mapo-don but wanted to try other menu items. It is a half-size set menu consisting of a bowl of Mapo Don and DanDan-men. You can choose between Soup and Dry for the DanDan-men. I chose Dry this time.

Last time the spiciness level was Lv.1 and I hardly felt any spiciness, so this time I set it to Lv.2.

The mapo-don is still excellent, but Lv.2 is quite spicy. 🌶️ I am a spicy food lover and I can handle spicy food, but when I finished it, my mouth was tingling for a while. I thought the spiciness level might have increased too much from Lv.1 to Lv.2 at once!

The DanDan-men was, hmmm, honestly average. The noodles were hard and a little difficult to eat. But the “Mapo-don” was of consistent quality! As usual, I could eat it in one sitting 😄
